We begin the week 5 recap with the primary reason we attend the races – AWESOME RACING! Comments heard at both tracks last weekend were awesome racing, great racing, some of the best racing seen in this area for a while. Friday, April 25, was a weekly show at Lakeside Speedway with the USRA A Modifieds, USRA B Mods, USRA Stock Cars, and the Grand Nationals. USRA B Mods, congrats green to checkered flag.

I-35 Speedway racing included the “best of the best” with the USMTS Modifieds, the Ironman B Mods and the Stock Cars.  Local hot shoes John Allen, Travis Siebert, and Kerry Davis were all within the Top 10 A Mods. The Stock Cars and the B Mods each had seven local drivers in the Top 10 displaying weekly these two tracks sport some of the “best of the best”.

Of course all this great racing starts with behind the scenes work, the track prep crew. At Lakeside Speedway the track prep crew is owner Mike Johnson and Mike Knight who spend many hours grading, sheep’s footing, and watering. At I-35 Speedway the crew is again owner Mike Johnson and Gene Stigall. These three gentlemen do a great job week in and week out and weather conditions always play a part. The Thursday before race weekend brought rain storms creating a situation of “not knowing how much moisture was in the track”, yet their great work allowed us to view great racing.

The other great item of interest this past weekend from Behind the Scenes include ongoing work for the season ending USRA Nationals at Lakeside Speedway. Racing season opens with “Speedweeks” in Florida culminating with the Daytona 500. The same thing is happening here locally. Kansas City’s version of “Speedweeks” will begin on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at Lakeside Speedway culminating with the NASCAR Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway on Sunday afternoon, October 5, 2014.

The USRA Nationals will be a four day event held at Lakeside Speedway. Wednesday October 1, 2014 will be the opening of three days of qualifying, with races every night for four nights culminating with the USRA Nationals on Saturday night. Plan your vacation time to be part of this exciting inaugural event. Lakeside has camping available for $30 for the weekend, contact the office at 913-299-9206 if you have more questions.

Of course we have lots of racing at both tracks to be completed before October. Make your plans to witness the outstanding talents of lots of people, drivers, crewmen, track workers, track prep crews, concession workers, announcers, scoreboard operators, ticket takers, ticket sellers, gate guards, clean up crews, mowing crews, office workers, etc. it takes a lot of talent to make a great race night and fortunately we are blessed with some of the best at both tracks.
